Why we hike — and Who we hike with

An introduction to Faithful Outdoors: why we exist, who this is for, and how we plan to keep faith the seasoning rather than the entrée.

A family of four walking a forest trail at first light, seen from behind, an adult holding a child's hand in the middle.
“ He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside still waters, He restores my soul. ”
— Psalm 23:2-3

This is the first field note. It feels right to start with a why.

We started Faithful Outdoors because we kept noticing the same thing: most of the brands we admired in the outdoor space were built around either very hardcore gear or very loud branding. There wasn’t much in the middle for the families we know — people who’d spend a Saturday on a mid-sized loop trail, fish a half-day for nothing, and call the whole thing perfect because the kids were laughing.

So we made room for that.

The kind of outdoors we’re talking about

We hike. We camp. We grill outside even when it’s raining. We take our kids fishing and call it a win when nobody falls in. Some of us shoot at the range; some of us hunt; most of us mostly just want to be outside and be still for a minute.

If that’s you — welcome. There’s a chair by the fire.

Who we hike with

Here’s the part where some brands get tense. We’re Christians. We believe the trees and the trout and the trailheads were made on purpose by a good God. That shapes how we wear the things we wear and what we say about it.

But — and this is the important part — we are not building a megaphone. We’re building a brand. The faith is the ground we’re standing on. You’ll see it in how we write and what we make. We’re just not going to shout it at you from a billboard.

You’ll find a few verses on this site. You’ll find some quiet reflections. You won’t find sermons.

If you’re not a Christian and you’re here for the trails and the gear, you’re welcome here too. We’re not going to ambush you.

What you’ll see from us

Three things to start:

  1. Field notes — short pieces like this one, two or three a month.
  2. Newsletter — a single, honest letter every couple of weeks. Sign up if that sounds nice.
  3. The shop, eventually — print-on-demand apparel and small goods, designed thoughtfully, shipped honestly. Coming this season.

That’s it. We’re starting small on purpose.

A small ask

If anything we make ends up meaning something to you — a shirt that fits, a verse that lands at the right time, a recipe you steal for camp coffee — tell somebody about it. We don’t have a marketing budget. We have a small fire and a few good friends. That’s how we’re going to grow this thing.

Thanks for reading the first one. See you on the trail.
